Ceu Renewal Requirements For A Medical Doctor'S License

Doctors must stay current on techniques and technology

Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit hours are required for all licensed medical doctors. Licensed health professionals must earn continuing education units (CEU), but medical doctor specific units, are called CME. The number and type of CME credit hours are defined by the states. Coursework must be approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) as defined by the American Medical Association (AMA). Coursework is divided into two categories. These categories are Category 1 (formal classes with post-test evaluation) and Category 2 (self directed learning).

Texas

Texas medical doctors are expected to complete a minimum of 24 continuing medical education (CME) courses accredited by the American Medical Association (AMA), the Texas Medical Association (TMA). Half of the CME courses must be Category 1 coursework and the remainder must be Category 2 activities. One (1) Category 1 credit hour must be devoted to medical ethics or professional responsibility.

Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, the State Board of Medicine requires medical doctors to complete a total of 100 CME credit hours every two years. A minimum of CMEs must be chosen from Category 1 credit hour options. Twelve (12) CME credit hours must cover Risk Management, or Patient safety. Coursework may fall into Category 1 or Category 2 guidelines. The balance of required CMEs may be covered in Category 2 activities.

Missouri

The Missouri State Board of Registration for the Healing Arts requires Medical Doctors to obtain at least 50 credit hours of Continuing Medical Education every (2) years. Medical Doctors who complete 40 CME credit hours of AMA approved Category 1 coursework that ends in a post-test evaluation, shall be deemed to have complied with the rule requiring 50 CME credit hours of coursework.
