A CEU qualification is required to teach massage therapy.
Leading a massage class with a continuing education unit (CEU) qualification can be rewarding and profitable for an experienced massage therapist. Check with the state you wish to teach in to see what the requirements and application process are to become an approved massage therapist. However, becoming an approved provider through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) will qualify your CEU class in a handful of states.
Instructions
1. Ensure your class is up to standard. Before becoming eligible to become an NCBTMB-approved continuing education course, a class must have been taught at least once within the last three years. The course material must cover topics that are beyond what would be found in a 500-hour basic massage program and must be 50 hours or fewer. If your course is beyond this length, you will need to split it up into multiple courses.
2. Read the NCBTMB code of ethics found on its website. All massage therapists approved to teach continuing education (CE) courses are expected to commit to this code, uphold a high level of professionalism, enhance the reputation of the massage profession and work toward the best interests of clients.
3. Find the Approved Provider Reference Guide and approved provider initial application on the NCBTMB website. Read the reference guide and complete the application online.
4. Print two copies of your application. Put these copies and any supporting documentation required into a three-ring binder, with each section of the application separated by tabs.
5. Include your payment and mail your application. As of 2011, the fee is $400 for an organization or $175 for an individual. This can be paid with a money order, cashier's check, or personal check made out to the NCBTMB, or it can be paid with Visa or MasterCard by including your credit card information in the appropriate fields on the online application. Mail the application to the address on the application.
