How Much Does A Surgical Tech Make In Florida

The State of Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation estimates that the demand for surgical technologists in the state will increase by more than 22 percent from 2010 through 2018. This increase in the demand for workers in the field should create more than 1,300 new jobs in Florida. The wages for a surgical tech in Floria are based upon experience level and geographic location.


Statewide Wages


Throughout the state of Florida, surgical technologists in Florida made an average of $17.80 per hour, or $37,030 per year as of May 2009, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The national average wages for surgical technologists at the time was $40,710, a figure 9 percent above the average annual amount for Florida techs. In comparison to other state average annual wages, Florida was the 14th lowest. The State of Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation estimates that entry-level surgical technicians in Florida can expect to make around $14.05 per hour or less, while more experienced workers earn around $19.68 per hour or more.


North Florida Wages


Panama City technicians received salaries at an average of $32,950 per year, making them the lowest paid workers in the field statewide. Surgical technologists in Gainesville made an average of $38,000 and were the highest-paid in North Florida. In Pensacola, surgical technicians averaged salaries of $34,340, while those in Jacksonville earned an average of $37,120 annually. The north Florida communities of Fort Walton Beach, Destin and Crestview featured average annual wages of $34,000 for technicians. For surgical techs in Tallahassee, yearly wages averaged $35,190.


Central Florida Wages


Surgical techs in the Bradenton-Sarasota area made $37,220 per year as of May 2009, making them the highest-paid workers in the field in Central Florida. Technicians in Orlando were the lowest paid regionally at an average of $34,340 annually. In the Daytona Beach area, average annual salaries were $36,900, while those in Lakeland averaged salaries of $35,570 per year. For technicians in the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville area, salaries averaged $34,650 per year. Port St. Lucie featured average annual salaries of $34,380 for surgical technicians.


South Florida Wages


In Cape Coral and Fort Myers, average annual salaries for surgical techs were the highest statewide at $48,070 per year as of May 2009. Surgical technologists in the greater Miami and Fort Lauderdale area made an average of $36,930 annually, making them the lowest-paid technicians in South Florida. In Tampa, wages were at an average of $37,610 per year, while technicians in Naples averaged $41,010. For Punta Gorda surgical techs, salaries averaged $37,410 per year.
