Explain Digital Analog Converters

A digital receiver is now required to obtain television programming.

To receive a television signal through an antenna, a set must now either have a digital receiver built in or use a digital-to-analog converter box. Digital and analog are two basic signal and connection types, with digital replacing analog, for the most part, as a newer option. Many people are confused by the digital-to-analog converter and why it is necessary, but there is an explanation.

Instructions

1. Compare the signal of analog and digital. Analog is a wave format that travels between towers and your antenna over a specific frequency. Each frequency is only able to handle one station. As more stations appear, there are fewer signals available. These signals also compete with radio, mobile phones and government agencies. Digital uses a different signal format, and although it transmits between towers, the signals don't compete with each other. In addition, a digital signal is capable of being compressed and holding more information. This is why in the United States, high-definition signals are transmitted in digital.

2. Display the connection process. Many digital televisions have a connection input known as HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface). This is the highest connection option available, but it is not found on analog televisions. Connect the coaxial cable running from the antenna into the "In" port on the converter box. Once connected, take another coaxial cable and attach it to the "Out" port on the converter, then plug the free end of the cable into the "In" port on the television.

3. Explain the conversion process of the converter. As the digital antenna receives the digital signal, the audio and video information travels into the converter. Once it reaches the converter, the data is extracted from its compressed form and converted to an analog signal. The analog signal is then sent into the analog television, allowing you to view the information. Without the converter box, the analog TV is unable to extract the compressed digital signal, leaving you with nothing but static on the set.
