According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, there are more than 970,000 public charities in the United States. These organizations range from local grass roots efforts to large, long-established international aid organizations. The following organizations, as ranked by Forbes, are the five largest American charities as of November 2009. Organizations were ranked according to private, nongovernment support received for the last available fiscal period. Most private foundations with few direct donors have been excluded.
United Way
United Way, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, is the largest American charity with $3.87 billion in total revenue in 2007. Since its inception in Denver in 1887, United Way has been working to advance the common good by focusing on education, income and health. Today, United Way's worldwide network operates in 45 countries and territories, including 1,300 local organizations in the United States.

Goodwill Industries International
Goodwill Industries is a network of 166 independent, community-based Goodwill sites in the United States and Canada that provide job training, job placement and similar services for people with disabilities, lack of education and job experience or employment challenges. Founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1902, Goodwill Industries, International is headquartered in Rockville, Maryland. The charity reported revenue of $3.28 billion in 2008.
