You can study radiation therapy online


Radiation therapy is a specialty area of radiologic science pertaining to the use of radiation in the treatment of medical conditions and illnesses, particularly cancer. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of radiation therapists is projected to in increase 27 percent through to 2018. A degree or diploma in radiation therapy or radiologic science is generally required to gain employment as a radiation therapist. Several schools in the United States offer online training programs in radiologic science and radiation therapy.


Washburn University


Washburn University offers a one-year certificate of completion in radiation therapy. Applicants must be registered as a professional radiologic technologist with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) prior to beginning the program. All coursework is available in an online distance-learning format with the exception of practical clinical experience that is performed at an affiliated medical center in a number of states, including Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Texas. Courses include clinical radiation therapy, treatment procedures, radiobiology and the physics of radiation therapy.

Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences


The Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences offers an online Bachelor of Science degree completion program in radiologic science. This program is designed for working professionals who wish to upgrade their knowledge and skills in order to advance their career options and earning potential. Candidates must hold an associate degree in health science, radiography, radiologic technology, radiologic science or nuclear medicine technology with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50. Applicants must also be registered with the ARRT or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB). This program can be completed with two years of study. Coursework includes healthcare law and ethics, organizational behavior, anatomy, statistics, mammography, physics and instrumentation, computed tomography, medical imaging and patient care.

Midwestern State University


Midwestern State University offers both a Bachelor of Science completion program in radiologic science and a Master of Science degree in radiologic science through online distance education. The bachelor’s degree is designed for registered radiologic technologists who wish to upgrade their credentials from a diploma or associate degree to a baccalaureate degree. All coursework is available through online instruction. Topics include pathophysiology, advanced imaging, radiation therapy, radiobiology, patient care and clinical skills. The master’s program offers three distinct majors: radiologic administration, radiologic education, and radiologist assistant. Coursework includes research methods, law and regulation, leadership theories, management techniques and a thesis.
