Become Licensed In Florida As A Radiology Technologist

Radiology technologists function as an important link in medical diagnostics.

A licensed (accurately referred to as "certified") radiology technologist in Florida contributes to the health care team by performing diagnostic imaging examinations, in attempts to aid physicians in diagnosis. Gaining licensure or certification in Florida requires applicants to complete an accredited education program in radiological technology, pass the national certification exam and the submission of an application for state endorsement. Although candidates can seek an undergraduate certificate, an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree, most radiology technologists hold an associate's degree.

Instructions

1. Graduate from a radiological technology education program with an associate's degree. Prospective students should only enroll in programs accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), in order to gain eligibility to sit for the national certification exam. Students can expect to take courses in human biology, human anatomy, human physiology, diagnostic imaging and radiography in addition to completing hands-on practicums in local hospitals.

2. Sit for and pass the national certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Applicants will need to obtain a handbook and application from their educational program director as directed by the ARRT. The handbook outlines all requirements for taking the radiography exam, including test content, number of questions and a full application. Fees to sit for the exam are $200.00 as of June 2010.

3. Gain licensure from the state of Florida by submitting the required application. Applicants must submit all education transcripts, along with an HIV/AIDS affidavit, in addition to submitting to a background check. Mail the application and all forms to the mailing address listed on the application. All forms, including the full application, are available online.
