Different Types Of Doctors

There are several types of doctors who care for various ailments and conditions that afflict the human body. A general practitioner is a physician who treats a variety of common ailments. Doctors who specialize in a particular branch of medicine are aptly referred to as specialists. Such doctors are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of a particular condition such as heart disease or neurological disorders. There are many branches of medicine and physicians who specialize in each branch.


Cardiologist


A cardiologist is a physician who specializes in the heart and cardiovascular system. A cardiologist treats conditions of the heart and blood vessels. There are several subspecialties within the branch of cardiology. Cardiologists specialize in pacemakers, cardiac catheterization and other cardiovascular procedures.


Dermatologist


A dermatologist is a physician who specializes in skin care. Dermatologists are trained in the specific diseases and conditions that affect the skin. They also specialize in the proper care of the skin. Dermatologists may also perform surgical procedures related to the skin such as biopsies to determine the proper diagnosis of a condition. They may also remove moles and other skin growths.


Podiatrist


A podiatrist is a doctor who specializes in the care of the foot. A podiatrist deals with foot disorders such as bunions, plantar warts, ingrown toenails, deformities such as club foot and trauma to the foot and related areas. A podiatrist can also treat sprains, fractures and other injuries to the foot.


Neurologist


A neurologist specializes in diseases of the nervous system. The field of neurology includes diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. A neurologist diagnoses and treats conditions such as seizures, stroke and conditions that may affect speech, movement and cognitive abilities.


Obstetrician


An obstetrician specializes in the care of women. Obstetricians are also trained as surgeons for the labor and delivery process. The obstetrician cares for the pregnant woman throughout her pregnancy and delivery of her baby. An obstetrician also provides postpartum care to ensure that she has healed properly and all is well.


Gynecologist


A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in the treatment of female disorders primarily of the reproductive system. The gynecologist performs pelvic examination and Pap smears for early detection of cancer. She also performs breast examinations, prescribes birth control and treats sexually transmitted diseases.


Pediatrician


A pediatrician specializes in the health and care of children from infancy through adolescence. Pediatricians treat illness, prescribe medications and oversee immunization schedules. They monitor a child's health, growth and development.
