Microgynon 30 is a monophasic birth control pill that gives women three weeks of hormone pills followed by one week of placebo pills, during the time when the user would normally menstruate. Like most birth control pills, Microgynon 30 use may result in breakthrough bleeding or spotting until the body is used to the hormone dosages it is being given daily. The pill also can cause other side effects, some of which can be serious.
Function
Microgynon 30 is used for the treatment of endometriosis as well as dysmenorrhoea (painful periods) and menorrhagia (heavy periods). Irregular periods, increased PMS symptoms and general prevention of pregnancy are also common uses of the birth control pill.
How It Works
Microgynon 30 is a hormonal contraceptive method, which overrides a woman's regular menstrual cycle. This is especially helpful for women with irregular periods or with heavy or painful cycles as well. The use of a hormonal birth control pill prevents an egg from becoming ripe, because the pills make the body believe that you have had a period already. This results in a lighter, shorter period. You can also skip periods while using birth control pills by taking the pill constantly and not substituting a week of placebo pills. The pill is taken once daily, preferably around the same time each day.
Side Effects
Some side effects of Microgynon 30 are: nausea, migraines or headaches, tender breasts, weight fluctuations, water retention, spotting, breakthrough bleeding, vomiting, dizziness, depression, lowered sexual libido, increased blood pressure, gallstones, liver function problems and increased risk of blood clots. While these side effects are uncommon, some women may be affected by some of them during the onset of use of Microgynon 30. If these side effects continue, consult your health care professional for further instructions on whether or not to stop taking this birth control pill.
Precautions
Breakthrough bleeding is not uncommon for women beginning to use this pill. Missed periods, spotting and other menstrual irregularities occur during the body's initial introduction to the pill. Increased risk of blood clots occur with the use of hormonal birth control pills. Stop taking Microgynon 30 and call a doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms: leg swelling, painful breathing, dizziness, chest pain, consistent migraine headaches, speech impairment, numbness on one part of the body, seizures, increased blood pressure or yellowing of the skin.
Warning
Women older than 35, smokers, or women with diabetes, heart disease in their family or high blood pressure should avoid using Microgynon 30 because they are at a higher risk for complications. Other health conditions that deter the use of this birth control pill include: severe depression, gallstones, kidney problems, family history of breast cancer, Crohn's Disease and history of liver disease.
Never use a birth control pill if you suspect yourself to be pregnant, are breastfeeding, have lupus, angina, heart valve disease or high cholesterol.
