Gifts That Benefit Charity

Give a gift that benefits charity.

Most people simply don't need the frivolous items that are traditionally exchanged around the holidays, on birthdays and for other events. Charities, however, always need things. Many people give gifts that benefit charities rather than each other. Giving a gift to a charity in lieu of a gift to someone else or simply giving to charity makes you feel good.

Money

One of the easiest ways to give a gift that benefits charity is to give money directly to the organization. That way, they can decide the best way to spend the money. If you are donating to a charity in someone else's name, choose a nonprofit organization that she regularly supports. If you aren't sure which charity to donate to, go with your gut, or go with your favorite charity, knowing that your friends will appreciate the gesture.

Toys

When the holidays roll around, chances are you go out shopping for all kinds of gifts for your loved ones. Remember to help people that are less fortunate during that time and shop for children whose parents can't afford gifts. Most cities and counties have organizations that connect children with Christmas gifts. Check with your local department of social services or a local church if you aren't sure go about this. Then, go to a local toy store or department store and choose gifts for the child. You may simply have the child's age and gender, or you may have a wish list. Remember that things like clothing and toiletries may be needed, so add those in with the fun toys.

Wigs

Everyone knows that many cancer patients lose their hair when they go through treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. But while insurance plans may pay for that treatment, they more than likely do not pay for things like wigs. So donate money to a group that provides wigs to cancer patients who can't afford to buy them. If you aren't sure where to find such a group, contact a nearby cancer center and someone can likely help you.

Charitable Gift Card

This is a great idea if you want to give someone a gift that benefits a charity. Choose a gift card that he can spend online at a website like justgive.org. You purchase the gift card from the website, but don't specify the nonprofit. Then, the recipient goes online and donates to whichever charity he chooses. That way, you are paying for the donation, but the recipient gets to have the fun of choosing where the money goes.
