What Is An Appropriate Christening Gift

Religious items are always an appropriate gift

Christening a child is a ceremonial welcoming into the community of the church and a lifetime of Christianity, or belief in Jesus Christ. This is a sacred and joyous time for the family of the child and an important milestone in the child's life. Selecting a gift that pays homage to the event's significance may seem challenging, but there are many appropriate items that will provide a meaningful gesture.

Gifts of Monetary Value

Money has always been considered an appropriate gift for a newly-christened child. Often children are christened as babies, and babies bring lots of new financial considerations for the family. Gifts of money for a baby are also considered investments in the child's future. If you want to give something of monetary value that is more creative than cash, choose something the child can cherish for a lifetime. For a girl, consider a gold crucifix pendant, or for a Catholic christening a pendant of the Blessed Mother. A pearl necklace is something she can wear to church every Sunday. For a boy, a sterling silver piggy bank or a personalized silver crucifix make appropriate gifts. A personalized gold bracelet can work for boys and girls.

Gifts of Faith

A gift that represents the importance religion will play in a child's life is always appreciated at a christening. Objects like a Bible with a personalized inscription, a picture book about Bible stories or a rosary make lovely gifts for a new child of the church. Teddy bears that say prayers or DVDs with cartoons about the life of Jesus Christ teach the message of Christianity.

Gifts of Commemoration

Finally, gifts that commemorate the importance of the day are common choices for a christening. Handmade blankets or framed needlepoint featuring the name of the child and the date of the christening can adorn the nursery. Also consider picture frames with a photo of the baby with his godparents and a plaque showing the date, or a framed poem about the importance of Christianity, with the date inscribed on the back.
