2003 Ford Explorer Transmission issues
Check transmission and check engine light came on and overdrive off light is flashing. Took it to local AAMCO dealer and they say it needs rebuild for $3000 Another shop quoted $3500.00. It is slipping, but not jerking hard when switching gears. One shop said if it is driving okay to go ahead and drive it until it fails completely, the price will be same as rebuilding it now. Has anyone else experienced this with an Explorer? Don't these vehicles have a 7 year/100,000 mile power train warranty? Ron 3/36,000 I think. I would be getting more opinions and when you go into a shop, do NOT tell them someone else has already diagnosed it and/or what the recommendations/prices you've been quoted. I did a quick check of Jasper and their reman's run $2400-2700 for the Explorer depending on sub-model, etc. Their units offer 3 yr/100,000 warranty, so I would expect AAMCO or whoever does it to waranty at least that long for that kind of money. I would suggest your local dealer it might just need a shift soleniod pack and a pcm reburn, Ford offers a quality rebuilt that is reasonably priced,at my dealership we do not rebuild we replace with factory rebuilt AAMCO= All Automatics Must Come Out Get another opinion. JUst another thought! if you have less than 120K you can buy an extended warranty from Ford for about 1300.00 and wait about a month and get it changed for your deductible. Thanks for the tip. I will check if tranny is covered. its the soliniode it hppened to mine now im good Had to have it rebuilt. Five different shops came up with the same diagnosis. Went with AAMCO because they rebuild with a after market trans that corrects the issue, all others would have put in the ford trans and ford has not addressed (admitted) the problem. .....Not so sure about that...... I was GM trained on the 700R4 unit and when we sent one back to GM that failed, they replaced with upgraded parts I assume (dangerous word) that Ford would have a similar program in effect. The bottom line is they're not gonna TELL you there's a problem because they want you to BUY the transmission instead of them giving it to you
