New pressure tank

new pressure tank

I was thinking of replacing my 20yr old pressure tank. What do you guys recommend-steel or fiberglass? What's the cost difference? Thanks for the advice Originally Posted by pumpguy I was thinking of replacing my 20yr old pressure tank. What do you guys recommend-steel or fiberglass? What's the cost difference? Thanks for the advice Pumpguy, i would go with a steel diaphragm holding tank verses a fiberglass. The reason being, most fiberglass tanks have a bag in them that is fastened to the bottom of the tank. Most steel tanks have a diaghram that is fastened close to the mid portion and has less stress on it than the bag. They will definitely last longer depending on the quality that you buy. I don't sell tanks online so this is an unbiased opinion. I would go for the wellxtrol. It's built to last and has safety components that protect the diaphragm from overexpanding. You will spend a little bit more but its worth the piece of mind. Also the wider you go the better. More horizontal expantion puts less stress on the diaphragm. What size tank do you have now? HYDRO I have a wellxtrol model WX-203. It is about 50 tall and about 15 diameter. I could go a little bigger but not much. Maybe I should replace it with the same tank I have as it's pretty old and still working ok. Thanks for the advice Pumpman, you have good taste. the WX203 is a good tank. If you want to upgrade, the WX205 will give you a little more storage and is wider wich means less vertical expantion. Its a good move. HYDRO I just installed two new pressure tanks for two different systems. I installed one tank that was fiberglass(Wellmate) and a steel bladder tank branded H2OW sold by A hardware company that starts with an A: http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1277657cp=1254880.1255019.1260878parentPage=familysearchId=1260878 This tank was quite a bit shorter but same diameter than the new 32 gallon WX203. The H2ow tank was a 30 gallon and drawdown was nearly the same @ 9-10 gallons at 30-50 lbs air settings. But I found out it is made by Well X-trol and it contained the Amtrol label yet sold for about a hundred bucks less that the WellX trol wx203 with free shipping if you pick it up at your local A#e Hardware. Anyway, you can tell it's the same tank only carries the H2OW label and is a pretty red instead of Well X Trol blue. All the old galvanized piping needed replacing on my jobs due to mineral build up so i replaced it all with 1 PVC. My wells are both very hard at about 80 grains so its a wonder those tanks lasted as long as they did (20 years). Watch out if you are trying to replace old wx 203's with new ones. The new ones are about 6 taller than the old. That another reason I got the h20w tank as it is still 37 tall. I was replacing two wonderful old Well X Trol wx203's bs5 Thanks for all the info Steve Relevant to this topic, can anyone weigh in on the difference between the rubber bladder found in Wellxtrol's vs. the air cell column in fiberglass Wellmates? It sounds like the air cell column is replaceable, but I'm not even sure how it works let alone know if it's a cost effective replacement. I have a WM-9 right now (running 40 - 60) and am thinking about upgrading to a WM-25 to decrease pump starts. Thanks for any input.
