Ac labor cost to replace defective new coil

AC Labor Cost to replace defective new coil

I have a two year old Rheem coil that is under warranty, but the AC tech stated that it is leaking (lost 4 pounds of coolant). The tech quoted a price of $800.00 for labor to remove coil and replace with another new Rheem coil. Is that a reasonable price to have a coil removed and replaced? I live in Tucson, Arizona. This company installed a new system in 8/2009 in my house. I have warranty on coil, but does not cover labor. Thanks. It's kind of bad when a unit is only 2 years old and the coil is bad. Are you sure it's the coil or is there a leak at the fitting on the coil. Before I spend that kind of money I would get someone else to check it out. I can't recall ever seeing a coil be bad that early in the game. And 4 pounds of freon R-22? What size unit do you have? Just wondering is all.... The freon loss was R410-A, and the size of 3 ton 13.5 SEER Rhud. The tech claimed he checked the seals of the copper pipe at the compressor and at the connection to the coil. He also stated that he check around the coil where he could reach with his detecting device, and it detected some leakage around the coil. Model numbers are 1-VANL 043JAZ and 1-RCFL HM4821 AC. Thanks. Coils Today are made as cheap as possible. I've seen many relatively new coils leak. I would call around and get at least three prices. Ask friends or neighbors if they know a good AC guy. BS...2 yrs old....they should cover it all! If not the company that installed it..then the manufacturer or at least they should give some sort of consideration. Did you call the same company that installed it? Thats just ridiculous. York is famous for bad coils straight from the manufacture To Gunguy45, It was the company that installed it for in 08/2009. The tech told me that if they installed this year then they would cover the labor cost, but since it was 08/2009, then they would not. I think I will contact Rhem/Rhud to find out what they say. But their warrant specifically stated that for five years they would cover the coil, but not the labor. Never hurts to ask. As theapprentice suggested I will get more estimates. We have the same problem with a Maytag system. It was installed 2 years ago( May 2009), a month after the installation, a leak developed in the ceiling due to the installing company failed to blow a pipe out they repaired the ceiling and wall. We knew there was a problem this week when the ceiling (same spot) developed another wet spot. We are in a townhome condo. The coil is being replaced by Maytag, however, a middleman is adding $50 to delivery, $600 to install. This time, installing company has taken the attitude that they can't guarantee the coil and they refuse to help with the ceiling. This company came for a service inspection in March 2011. We also had to replace the freon they claim leaked, plus said that coil had frozen. We have called Maytag and could get no answers. The tech from the A/C company insisted that coils are cheaply made these days - all models and brands.....what is wrong with this picture. We are going to call other companies, but we are concerned that they will charge for an estimate. This forum is for do it yourself not to be about pricing. The pricing seems to be inline with waht it would take to replace a evap coil that was in warranty. Most contractors have a 1 year labor warranty on their installs unless you purchase an extended warranty.
