Girl Scout Interest Patch Ideas

Daisy Journey Award Patch

Coming up with ideas for Girl Scout Interest Patches is a fine troop-building exercise and gives the girls an opportunity to express some of the subjects that they're interested in learning more about. Interest Patches can be created for just about any subject and encompass a broad range of themes.

General Information

Girl Scout Interest Patches (also referred to as IPPs or IPs) are used to signify a particular skill, experience or achievement within a specific topic or focus. Below are a variety of patch ideas for Ambassadors, Cadettes and Seniors. According to the section on Interest Project Patches from the GSUSA website, new interest projects include Home is Where the Heart Is, B Xtreme, Global Girls, On Your Own, G.O. Girl!, Uncovering the Evidence, In the Pink, Couch Potato, Sew Glam, and Hi-Tech Hide and Seek. These projects were added to the preexisting categories of Skill Builders, Technology, Service Projects and Career Exploration. There are numerous other designs that you may want to consider.

Interest Patches for Learning

The patches in this category can be made to recognize the ability, talent, or understanding within a particular area. Some Interest Patch ideas are Foreign Languages, Recycling, Budgeting, Healthy Eating, Folk Arts, Aerospace, Reading & Books, Communicating Techniques, Computer Proficiency, Architecture, Current Events, Animal Care, State Capitals & Geography, Drug Prevention, Patriotism, Cultures and Families, Poetry, Famous Figures, Table Setting, Fractions, Team Work, Photography, Advertising, Astronomy, Baking, Cooking Healthy, Fire Safety, Taking Care of Others, and Dressing for Success. You can alter these ideas to be more specific. For example, Famous Figures can be changed to Role Models, where a Girl Scout interviews someone she looks up to and shares that information (along with why she chose the person and what traits in particular she admires) with the rest of the troop members.

Occasion Interest Patches

These patches can be for Scouts' participation in an event, places they've traveled and things like community service or fund raisers they participated in. Along those lines, some ideas include Bake Sale, Carwash, Food Pantry, Community Cleanup, Visiting Patients or the Elderly, and Organizing Books in a Library. If your troop has gone on field trips, you can design patches for the place you went: Museums, Factories, Businesses, Landmarks, Airports, Recreation or Community Centers and so on. These journeys also lend themselves to even more patch ideas, since the girls likely participated in activities during the visit. Patches of this nature can include First Aid Safety, Emergency Preparation, Backpacking, Orienteering, Compass & Map Reading, Problem Solving, Outdoor Survival, Volunteering, Discovering Places, Interacting with Others, Plant Life, Conflict Resolution, Business Etiquette, and Interviewing Techniques.

Additional Ideas for Interest Patches

Interest Patches can also be given for things such as Self-Defense, Fashion, Shopping on a Budget, Do It Yourself Craft Projects, Gardening, Athletics, Scholarly Achievements, Music, Heritage, Puzzles, Storytelling, Making Your Own Invention, Driver's Education & Safety, Plays and Movies. The best thing about coming up with ideas for these patches (which can even make for its very own patch) is the opportunity it gives the girls to learn about the specific talents and interests of their fellow troop members. Many times, they'll be inspired and become attracted to activities and skills that they hadn't been before.
