Support garments help heal skin damaged by surgery.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery states that liposuction serves to reduce fat in areas of the body where diet and exercise are unable to minimize accumulation and expansion of fat cells. A wide variety of support garments exist to help heal various parts of the body that have undergone liposuction surgery.
Significance
After liposuction surgery, skin in the affected area becomes loose, requiring elastic compression garments to support and hold skin tightly against the body. These garments also speed recovery by improving blood circulation and forcing bodily fluids back into deep tissue to minimize swelling, while supplying fresh oxygen and nutrients to the damaged area.
Time Frame
The length of time that most patients will need to use these pieces is dependent on the part of the body that has undergone the procedure. "You will have a compression garment to wear over the treated areas. In most cases, you'll need to wear this garment for about six weeks," states the website of Dr. Carmen Kavali, an Atlanta plastic surgeon. The support garment fits under normal clothing.
Types
Full body garments support middle and lower parts of the body, often covering the back and stomach, while reaching all the way to the breasts. Specific garments are also available for the back, thighs, knees, arms, shoulders, neck, face and calves, with abdominal support garments typically used after abdominal liposuction. Males who undergo abdominal liposuction may wish to wear a scrotum support garment, due to the tendency of swelling to gravitate to the genital area.
