TennCare is Tennessee's state healthcare system.
TennCare is the Tennessee state system for public healthcare. It is available only to individuals and families that meet specific requirements, including financial status and access to other healthcare providers. In order to receive TennCare benefits, you must meet specific qualifications as set by the state.
Age
TennCare covers people of specific ages. For TennCare Medicaid, the only program that accepts new members, you can qualify by being a child under the age of 21. Adults may also qualify if they have certain health conditions or income restrictions, or if they live in a nursing home.
Specific Conditions
People with certain health conditions may qualify for TennCare. These include women who are pregnant or in need of treatment for breast and cervical cancer, and family members of people who may have a long-term physical or mental health problem.
Family Qualifications
Single-parent families with a young child living in the household may be eligible for TennCare, as well as two-parent households where one parent has lost a job or had their work hours cut significantly.
Standard Eligibility
TennCare Standard is available for children under age 19 who are already enrolled in TennCare Medicaid. If these children do not have access to health insurance through their own or a parent's job then they may qualify for TennCare Standard services. In order to quality the child must be uninsured, meaning he meets the above qualifications and his family income is above 200 percent poverty. They may also qualify if they have a medical condition that makes them uninsurable through other health insurance providers.
Qualification Evaluation and Resources
In order for someone to qualify for TennCare medical services, they must visit their local Department of Human Services office. The employees there will evaluate the client's medical needs and qualification status for TennCare and make recommendations. If they qualify, the client must then fill out a TennCare application and file it with the state in order to receive TennCare benefits.
