Wichita is the largest city in Kansas, home to more than 357,000 people, as of 2006. The Kansas Department of Labor estimates that the demand for professionals in business and finance occupations will increase by about 4 percent in the Wichita and the surrounding region from 2006 through 2016. Wichita residents hoping to enter a business-related field can attend one of five private or public business colleges in the city.
Wichita Area Technical College
Established in 1965, Wichita Area Technical College is a public, two-year institution. The college grants two-year associate of applied science degrees and one-year technical diplomas in business administration with concentrations in accounting, banking and finance; operations management and supervision; Six Sigma training; and entrepreneurship. A one-semester certificate is also available in e-marketing. The college offers courses during day and evening hours at two campuses in Wichita.
Wichita State University
Wichita State University is a public, four-year institution founded in 1895. More than 14,800 undergraduate and graduate students attend the college, as of 2010. The university's W. Frank Barton School of Business offers bachelor's degrees in accounting, business administration, economics, entrepreneurship, human resource management, international business, management, management information systems, marketing and real estate. For-credit internships and paid cooperative work placements are offered for undergraduates, and study-abroad opportunities are available. The college also grants master's degrees in accounting and business administration. The MBA offerings include both a traditional course of study and a program exclusively for established executives.
Friends University
Friends University is a nondenominational Christian institution with more than 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students, as of 2010. The college offers a bachelor's degree in general business administration that includes required coursework in economics, finance, management and accounting. For working adults, the university features baccalaureate degree programs in business management, human resource management, and organizational leadership and management. Students complete classes on a part-time basis during nights and weekends to accommodate their work schedules. At the graduate levels, master's degrees are offered in business administration, business law, global leadership and management, management and information systems, operations management and organizational development.
Newman University
Newman University, established by the Roman Catholic Church in 1933, has an enrollment of more than 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students, as of 2010. The college offers a two-year associate of science degree in business science and a bachelor's degree in business administration. The latter program features concentrations in general business or management. An entirely online bachelor of science degree in business science is also available. The master's of business administration program at Newman includes concentrations in finance, international business, leadership, management and management information systems. A joint master's program in social work and business administration is also featured.
National American University
National American University is a private, for-profit institution with campuses across the United States, including two branches in Wichita. The college features associate and bachelor's degrees in accounting, applied management and business administration. At the baccalaureate level, the business administration program requires students to select an emphasis in one of six specialties: financial management, human resource management, information systems, international business, management and marketing. Health-care management degree programs -- which combine elements of business and coursework on medical laws and regulations -- are featured at the associate and baccalaureate levels.
