What Are Breast Pads

Breast pads help new mothers with successful breast-feeding.

Among the huge array of products available to new mothers are breast pads, devices that are used to absorb milk that may leak out of a nursing mother's breasts. Both disposable and reusable pads are available, and each of these has unique benefits. When the months of nursing are over, you can use pads for novel purposes, from beauty care to household cleaning.

Use Breast Pads

Breast pads are tucked inside your bra and absorb excess lactation milk. Breast pads should be changed about every three or four hours, or around feeding time. Leaving pads in longer risks bacteria growth in the pad due to body heat and the wetness from the milk.

Disposable Pads

Disposable pads are used until they are wet and then thrown away. They are made of absorbent material and cannot be reused. Although cheaper to purchase than reusable pads, they may be more expensive in the long run.

Reusable Pads

Reusable pads are made of cotton or a cotton-like fabric and can be laundered numerous times. They can last long enough to be used during several pregnancies. Establish a routine where you have clean, dry pads available when a wet pair is ready to be placed in the laundry.

Novel Uses of Breast Pads

If you're finished breast-feeding and still have a stash of breast pads, consider some alternate uses. Use reusable pads to clean glass surfaces and mirrors, to remove makeup and nail polish, or even on your coffee table in place of a coaster.
