Wages For Radiologists

Radiologists use diagnostic imagery to help treat and diagnose patients.


Radiologists use a variety of imaging devices to help health care professionals diagnose and treat various kinds of illnesses and injuries. These workers are responsible for operating devices such as as X-rays machines, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and mammography tools. Yearly salaries for radiologists differ depending on a variety of factors.


National Averages


There were approximately 213,560 radiologists in the United States in 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Radiologists earned an average hourly wage of $26.05, or about $54,180 per year. The radiologists in the highest 10th percentile of earners made $36.27 per hour, or $75,440 per year, while those in the lowest 10th percentile made an average of $17.16 per hour, or $35,700 per year.


Industry Averages


The BLS reports that radiologists employed in the "scientific research and development services" sector had the highest average wages in 2009, earning $31.16 per hour, or $64,800 per year. The sector with the second-highest average income for these workers, "management, scientific and technical consulting services" earned an average hourly wage of $29.79, or $61,970 per year. The third highest-paying industry, "employment services" paid an average hourly salary of $28.66, or $59,620 per year.


Highest Paying States


The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that radiologists in Massachusetts, Nevada, Maryland, Hawaii and the District of Columbia had the highest average salaries out of all states in 2009. Radiologists in Massachusetts made an average of $32.95 per hour, or $68,530 per year, while those in Nevada made an average of $31.93 per hour, or $66,420 per year. Radiologists in the third highest-paying state, Maryland, earned an average of $31.64 per hour, or $65,820 per year.


Highest Paying Metro Areas


Radiologists working in San Jose, California, had the highest average salaries out of any metropolitan area in 2009, according to the BLS. These radiologists made an average income of $37.64 per hour, or about $78,300 per year. The second-highest paying city, Oakland, California, had radiologist salaries of $34.99 per hour, or about $72,790 per year. Radiologists in Boston, Massachusetts, had the third-highest salaries, earning an average of $34.88 per hour, or about $72,540 per year.
