Breastfeed With Breast Implants

Most but not all women with implants can breast-feed.

Whether currently pregnant or thinking about the future, many women with breast implants wonder whether or not they'll be able to nurse their babies. While most women with implants can breast-feed, you won't know your own ability to nurse until you try.

Implant Placement

Implants placed under the chest muscles are less likely to interfere with normal milk production than those placed over the muscle, says BreastImplants4You.

Incision Type

Most women who have had their implants inserted through an incision under the breast can nurse without problems, but those who had nipple incisions are more likely to have nerve damage that can interfere with breast-feeding.

The Importance of Nerves

Nerve damage is a concern with breast surgery because nerves in the breast direct the brain to release prolactin and oxytocin, two hormones which are essential to milk production, according to BabyCenter.

Safety of Breast Milk

Women with silicone breast implants may also worry that a ruptured implant can allow silicone to leak into their breast milk; according to BabyCenter, silicone does not leak into milk and is unlikely to be harmful to a nursing baby if a leak did occur.

Considerations

If you're interested in breast augmentation but would like to become pregnant in the future, consider waiting until you're finished having children to ensure that your implants won't interfere with your plans to nurse.
