Fibroids' Role in Fertility
Fibroids can occur inside the uterus at any stage in a woman's life. She may have used an IUD or have irregular menstrual cycles or have other factors that contributed to the fibroids.
According to Planned Parenthood, in some cases, fibroids can make it more difficult to get pregnant and sustain a pregnancy. Generally, fibroids are not the direct cause of infertility but may interfere with it.
Fibroids are tissues and cells that clump and create a physical obstacle from the fetus properly developing and adhering. Some women may miscarry because of fibroids.
What Causes Infertility?
According to Planned Parenthood one in three couples has some infertility issues.
Smoking, poor health, irregular ovulation (not releasing eggs), blocked fallopian tubes or endometriosis can all interfere with fertility. Treatment varies for each condition and for each woman.
Reproductive Technologies
Women who have fertility issues can consider intrauterine insemination, where semen is introduced into the uterus. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is another option: The woman is given drugs to prompt the production of several eggs. These eggs are placed in a petri dish and fertilized with semen, and the most viable eggs are placed back into the woman's uterus.
