Symptoms & Treatment For Sciatica

Sciatica is classified as pain and numbness that begins in the sciatic nerve, which is found in the lower back and extends down the back of the legs. It can be mildly painful for some, but the pain can be severely debilitating for others. The good news is there are many treatment options available.

Generally the symptom of sciatica is pain on only one side of the body at a time, usually running from the lower back down the leg and sometimes into the foot.

Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen

Taking an over-the-counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help to reduce the inflammation and pain caused by sciatica.

Hot and Cold Compresses

Some doctors suggest using hot and cold compresses at different intervals to treat sciatica pain.

Stretching

Gentle stretching of the lower back muscles can help to treat and prevent pain from sciatica.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be extremely beneficial in reducing sciatica pain and numbness.

Water Exercises

Exercising in water can dramatically reduce sciatica pain and improve flexibility.

Yoga

Several Yoga positions can help lessen pain from sciatica while improving flexibility and strength. Yoga also helps to reduce stress, which is a large factor in lower back pain.
