Questions To Ask A Doctor On Your First Pregnancy Visit

You can experience a range of emotions during your first visit to the doctor during your pregnancy, particularly if you're not sure what to expect. Many questions begin spinning through your head at the sight of a positive pregnancy test. Begin a list of these questions before your first appointment to ensure all of your concerns are addressed.

Doctor's Background

Ask your doctor about her philosophy on childbirth to be sure it fits your vision. Ask the doctor if she regularly performs episiotomies on her patients, her rate of cesarean births and how she feels about drug-free childbirth, if that is important to you. Question the doctor about her feelings on induction and how long she typically allows a woman to go past her due date. Determine how flexible your doctor will be to allow you to have the birth experience you want. Some obstetricians are rigid in their methods, without considering the wishes of the mother. While the doctor is the medical professional, it is your birth experience. Barring complications, ensure your wishes will be met by your doctor.

Health Concerns

Address any health concerns with the doctor during your first pregnancy visit. Ask about any prescription medications you currently take and how they may affect the baby. Determine if any preexisting health conditions may be exacerbated by the pregnancy or childbirth. Ask your doctor about genetic concerns you may have for the baby. Determine proceed if you experience cramping, bleeding or other complications if they occur before or after the doctor's normal office hours.

Prenatal Care

Discuss the typical schedule for prenatal care with your doctor. Typically, the prenatal visits become closer as you progress though the pregnancy, eventually occurring once a week. Ask about what will happen during regular checkups. Ask about prenatal screenings, birth defect testing, ultrasounds and other medical procedures throughout the pregnancy. If you live in a city with multiple hospitals, ask if your doctor has a preferred hospital for deliveries.

Restrictions & Recommendations

Ask your doctor about any restrictions or recommendations he has in regard to food, exercise, sexual activity and over-the-counter medications. Address any upcoming travel plans or restrictions the doctor may impose during the pregnancy. Ask any specific questions you have regarding your job responsibilities and other normal activities.
