Children of low income families in Tennessee may qualify for Medicaid benefits through TennCare.
TennCare provides Medicaid benefits to qualifying residents of Tennessee. Children of low-income families, pregnant women, elderly and disabled people may apply for TennCare benefits through the Tennessee Department of Human Services. Applicants must prove eligibility based on household size, income and available resources. Applications may be obtained at your local DHS office or completed online. Before you apply for TennCare benefits, utilize the online screening tool at the Tennessee government website (tn.gov) to verify your eligibility.
Instructions
1. Access the TennCare screening tool online at the Tennessee government website. Select your preferred language and click the Eligibility Screening icon at the bottom of the page.
2. Provide the required information as designated by the red asterisk, including your full name, citizenship status, county of residence, your age and gender. Indicate if you are disabled or pregnant. Provide the amount of any medical expenses you may have.
3. Enter the amount of your gross income, earned and unearned, as well as the value of any resources, such as money in bank accounts and property.
4. Furnish information for any other members of your household. Click "Next" to proceed with the screening.
5. Enter the average monthly expenses of the household, including child care costs, child support paid, utility bills and rent or mortgage.
6. Review the summary of information provided for the household and its members. Use the "Back" arrow at the bottom of the screen to correct any mistakes.
7. Click "Next" to view your eligibility for Tenncare, as well as the food stamp and Families First programs. Select the icon at the bottom of the page to apply for benefits online.
