San Antonio, in the south central portion of Texas, is a large city rich in cultural diversity. More than 1.4 million people call San Antonio home. High schools are located throughout the vast city, and range from traditional institutions to private facilities designed for special needs students or those seeking a specific career path once high school is complete.
Traditional High Schools
Northside ISD (Independent School District) has a total of 15 high schools located throughout San Antonio. The high school within this state-sponsored district are: Louis D. Brandeis High School, William J. Brennan High School, Business Careers High School, Thomas C. Clark High School, Communications Arts High School, Construction Careers Academy, Health Careers High School, Oliver Wendell Holmes High School, John Jay High School, Jay Science & Engineering Academy, John Marshall High School, Sandra Day O'Connor High School, John Paul Stevens High School, William H. Taft High School and Earl Warren High School. These traditional high schools are mandated by the school district and, thus, adhere to its generally and widely accepted and utilized processes, procedures and policies for educational purposes.
Private Schools (Non-Religious)
Nonsectarian high schools can be found throughout San Antonio; Providence High School offers schooling for female students between grades 6 to 12, with a focus on preparation for college. In addition, private school without a religious affiliation and offering a high school education include The Winston School San Antonio for students with learning disabilities and special needs, and Keystone School, which has accelerated learning programs for motivated students.
Religious Schools
From the all-girls Incarnate Word High School to the all-boys Central Catholic High School, religious schools in San Antonio are available in a wide variety of religious affiliations. Catholic offerings include St Gerard's Regional Catholic High School, The Atonement Academy, Antonian College Prep and St. Anthony Catholic High School. A more broad Christian-based education can be found at schools including Sendero Christian Academy, Blessed Hope Academy, Christian Academy Of San Antonio, Christian Heritage Schools and San Antonio Christian Schools.
Alternative Education
Alternate education is yet another option for high school studies. San Antonio Independent School District offers education through multiple high schools including G.W. Brackenridge High School, Luther Burbank Vocational High School, Thomas Edison High School, Fox Tech High School, Highlands High School, San Houston High School, Thomas Jefferson High School, Sidney Lanier High School, Navarro High School and Travis Early College. Additional options, outside of the Independent School District, include the Healy-Murphy School, which specifically targets youth having experienced trauma and hardships throughout life and thus require additional emotional support in addition to an education. The North East Independent School District also provides alternate education via The Academy of Creative Education, which places an emphasis on students who have been challenged in life and thus the school accepts high school students through age 21. Other alternative options include schools for students seeking eventual careers in automotive technology, agriculture and electronics. The mission of the district is to provide a high school education to those not best served by traditional high school environments.
