Different Jobs In Radiology

X-rays are taken by radiologists.

Radiology uses imaging, such as x-ray and MRI, to help diagnose conditions and diseases. Radiology also involves radiation therapy to treat diseases such as cancer. There are many different kinds of jobs within radiology; the majority require a four-year undergraduate science degree and completion of medical school, including a residency in radiology. Technician jobs often require a certificate or two-year program for mastery.

Radiographic technicians

Radiographic technicians use radiation to create images from inside the human body. Radiographers are in charge of running tests using x-rays, magnetic resonance imagery (MRI) units, mammography (breast) screening units, and cardiovascular interventional technology (CIT). Radiographers work at both hospitals and in doctors' offices and can specialize in detecting soft tissue damage, bone damage and cancers. Salaries range from about $24,000 to $55,000 depending on training, experience and location.

Radiation therapy specialists

Radiation therapy involves trained specialists who oversee and administer dosages of radiation to cancer patients. Radiation is aimed at cancerous growths in order to stop them from growing and to decrease their size. Jobs in this area range from radiologic oncologists, or doctors who specialize in prescribing radiology to cancer patients, to nurses and support staff who assist patients undergoing radiation therapy procedures. Salaries range from $35,000 for nurses and technicians to $200,000 for radiologic oncologists, depending on experience and the type of hospital or institution.

Ultrasound and sonogram specialists

Ultrasound or sonogram specialists use mobile radiation imaging tools to look inside the body in ways x-rays can't, such as scanning the liver, kidneys and other organs for damage, establishing the health, sex, and development of a fetus, or using ultrasound for physical therapy to help heal muscles and other damaged soft tissue. Salaries can range from $24,000 to $56,000, depending on experience, location and type of institution or workplace.
