There are a slew of social and economic ills in Haiti that dramatically affect the children living there. Due to the lack of safe drinking water, adequate education, proper health care and desirable living conditions, Haitian children suffer poor health and short life expectancy. Not everyone can go to Haiti and help out physically, but there are ways to sponsor a child living in the country.
Instructions
1. Research sponsorship programs to avoid scams, and make multiple contacts with an organization before agreeing to contribute. Work with reputable companies like World Vision, which offers security and updates. If you want more advice, call a medical school or hospital close to you to see if they have any contacts with specific organizations. Many schools and hospitals send students and doctors to Haiti and know of honest organizations to work with there.
2. Make payments. A little bit of American money goes a long way in Haiti. Typical sponsorship payments range from $25 to $50 per month. Most organizations require a payment commitment, so make sure you can budget the payments over an extended period of time to maintain contact with your sponsored child.
3. Offer additional ways to help. If you want to sponsor a specific child, make and keep contact with her. The organization you donate through will likely provide the bare essentials, like medical assistance, clean water and food, but you can see if there are other things the child needs, such as additional tuition or clothing.
