Mri Technician Training

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, was first discovered in 1946. Its first application was in the field of chemical and physical molecular analysis. It was not until 1971 that the discovery was made that it could be used to tell the difference between tissues and tumors and the need for MRI technicians arose.

High School Preparation

High school students can get a head start on MRI technician training by taking and getting good marks in science subjects such as physiology, anatomy, biology and chemistry.

Schools

MRI technician training is available at special radiology schools, colleges, universities and trade schools, but to be employed at a hospital you must graduate from an accredited radiology school.

Degrees

Trade schools will offer 2-year associates degrees, while colleges and universities have 4-year bachelor of science degrees. Radiology schools can offer either or both choices.

Certification

Once you have your degree, which will be in radiology technology, you need to become certified as an MRI technician.

Licensing Exam

As of 2009, 40 states required MRI technicians to be licensed. In most cases you need to pass an exam, but it varies with each state.
