Level 1 Breast Cancer Prognosis

Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer found in women. Stage 1 breast cancer is a small tumor usually less than 2 centimeters. In stage 1 breast cancer the tumor is confined to the breast and has not spread to other parts of the body.

Symptoms

Stage 1 breast cancer may include a painless lump found in the breast. In some cases, a lump may be discovered in the lymph node under the arm rather than in the breast.

Treatment

Treatment of stage 1 breast cancer may included a lumpectomy, whereas the lump is removed from the breast. Additional treatments may include radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and biological therapy.

Research

According to the Society for Women's Health Research, "Although heart disease has a higher fatality rate in American women, a strong majority of women say breast cancer is the disease they fear the most." However, advances in treatment have increased survival rates dramatically, so, though it is the most common cancer, it is no longer the leading cancer killer of women in the U.S.

Early Detection

Early detection is the key factor is stage 1 breast cancer survival. A routine yearly mammogram should be preformed in woman over the age of 40.

Prognosis

According to the American Cancer Society more woman survive stage 1 breast cancer than any other stage. Prognosis of stage 1 breast cancer has a high 5-year success rate--nearly 100 percent.
