Write An Advantages And Disadvantages Essay

Most topics and issues have advantages and disadvantages. Writing an essay about the advantages and disadvantages of an issue requires an organized outline, lists, and choosing one of two formats. When you write an essay about advantages and disadvantages, remember that you are not persuading the audience but simply giving information.

Instructions

1. Choose a topic you can write easily. For example, writing an advantage and disadvantage essay about wearing a bike helmet, shopping the day after Thanksgiving, or renting movies from a video store requires only a small amount of research.

2. Write a list noting the advantages and disadvantages of your topic. Arrange them in the order you plan on writing them in your essay. Create a rough outline of your essay, including how many paragraphs you want and what you plan on writing for the conclusion.

3. Begin your essay by introducing your topic and explaining that you are exploring the advantages and disadvantages of this topic. You do not need a thesis because this is not a persuasive-paper. You aren't proving anything; you are simply giving information.

4. Use transitions when writing your essay. Do not start every sentence with the words, one advantage or one disadvantage. Use words like despite, nevertheless, yet, however and although. Keep your advantages and disadvantages grouped together. Write one or two paragraphs for each.

5. Close your essay with the most important advantage and disadvantage. Do not add your opinion at the end. If you write this sort of essay correctly, you have informed the reader about the advantages and disadvantages without persuading them with your opinion.
