Social Security
provides some benefits for people age 60.
Most people know that Social Security provides retirement benefits and medical benefits for elderly people but they provide some benefits for qualified younger people as well. Social Security benefits for people that are 60 years old include a couple of types of disability benefits and medical benefits for disabled people.
Social Security Disability Insurance
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides a monthly check for those who cannot work because of a disability. To qualify, you must have worked a certain length of time in the past and paid into Social Security. The amount you can receive each month depends on how long you have worked and how much you paid into Social Security in the past. If you are younger than retirement age, you can qualify for SSDI; this includes people that are 60 years old. After retirement age, you can begin collecting Social Security retirement benefits.
Supplemental Security Income
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provides a monthly check for those cannot work because of a disability that do not qualify for SSDI because not enough money was paid into Social Security in the past. You must have limited income and limited resources in order to qualify for SSI. If you are younger than retirement age, you can qualify, including those 60 years old. After retirement age, if you do not qualify for Social Security retirement benefits, you may continue to qualify for SSI.
Medicare
Medicare pays for many health care services for people age 65 and over but those that receive SSDI and SSI can also qualify for Medicare. If you are 60 years old and have qualified for SSDI or SSI for at least 24 months, you will receive Medicare. Medicare coverage includes inpatient medical care, outpatient medical care and prescription drug coverage. You must pay a monthly premium for Medicare coverage, but those with low incomes can get help paying their premiums.
