Change The Fuel Filter On A 1999 Kia Sportage

Change the Fuel Filter on a 1999 Kia Sportage

Changing the fuel filter in your 1999 Kia Sportage will protect your fuel-injection system from clogging or other damage occurring from particles that are in the fuel. The fuel filter is located under the battery tray on your Sportage and can be a little hard to reach but will come out with persistence. The fuel lines connect to the filter with quick disconnects. The filter is readily available from most auto-parts stores or from the Kia dealership.

Instructions

1. Open the hood of your Sportage and disconnect the retaining bolt from the negative battery terminal, using a wrench. Remove the negative battery cable from the terminal, setting it aside for now.

2. Locate the access panel in the floor of your Kia under the rear seat. Remove the panel using a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws, then start the truck and let it idle. Remove the electrical connector from the fuel pump inside the access hole and allow the engine to run out of fuel. This will relieve the pressure in the fuel system.

3. Locate the quick disconnects on each end of the fuel filter, then push the tabs on the connector with a pair of pliers to release it. Do this for both connectors. Remove the retaining bolt from the mounting bracket with a socket and ratchet, then slide the filter out of the bracket. Remove it from the engine compartment and discard it.

4. Slide a new filter into the bracket and tighten the retaining bolt with a socket and ratchet. Push the quick disconnects onto the new filter, making sure the fuel lines are secure.

5. Connect the negative battery cable to the negative terminal of the battery, then install the retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt with a wrench.

6. Move back to the access panel inside the car and plug the wiring harness connector into the fuel pump through the access hole. Close the access panel and secure it with a Phillips screwdriver. Turn the ignition to the On position and allow the fuel pump to run for about 10 seconds, then shut it off. The pump will run automatically to build the necessary pressure in the fuel system.

7. Cycle the switch several times for 10 seconds at a time until the pump shuts off on its own, which will happen when the fuel system is properly pressurized. Start the engine and check the filter to ensure there are no leaks.
