Business Development Manager Careers

Business development managers help get new business for a company.


A business development manager helps companies and organizations increase their business by developing strategies to reach new customers and expand their target audience. Business development managers assess the strengths and weaknesses of each department and determine how they can effectively create new business opportunities. Individuals interested in having a career in the field must have a strong educational background in sales and marketing, and the ability to lead employees in new directions.


Education


Those interested in becoming a business development manager may have a Master of Business Administration in economics, finance or commerce, but it's not necessary. More important is a background is sales and negotiation. Students may also want to take courses in communications.


Responsibilities


In order to help a company or business grow, business development managers conduct research on how each department can expand and reach new customers. These managers work with the marketing and sales teams to develop strategies and new advertising and sales campaigns.


Skills


Business development managers must have strong leadership, communication, organizational and persuasive skills. It may also be important for prospective business development managers to have an understanding of computers and information technology. Business development managers also need to work as team leaders, and be able to give positive feedback, offer constructive criticism, establish goals and motivate employees.


Salary


According to Indeed.com, as of 2010, the average salary for a business development manager is $84,000 per year. PayScale.com reports that business development managers with less than a year of experience average between $35,000 to $63,000 per year, while those with over 20 years of experience average between $72,000 - $119,000 per year.
