Wide 2-inch blinds can control light in any room of your home.
Adding blinds to a window in your home gives you added privacy and more options for letting light into the room. Two-inch window blinds are wider than conventional 1-inch blinds. They can hang vertically or horizontally and rely on a rigid wand and a series of string pulls to open, close and turn. In most cases, if the want doesn't work, you should be able to fix the blinds yourself.
Two-Inch Blind Operation
Two-inch vertical or horizontal window blinds use rigid metal, plastic or wooden wands to control the tilt, or angle, of the blinds. All blinds move together when the wand is turned, which releases or pulls on a cord that runs through and attaches to the carrier for each blind. Separate strings control the blinds, causing them to pull together or separate and cover the entire window. Because they are larger than other types of blinds, 2-inch blinds may be somewhat easier to work with and inspect.
Diagnosing the Problem
Two-inch blinds are wider than most types of blinds. This means they have more surface area to become coated with dust or stuck on obstructions such as window curtains and nearby plants. Check to ensure that the blinds hang freely and that there is space between each blind. A cracked or sagging slat that isn't connected to the strings may obstruct the blinds above and below it, preventing them from moving even if the wand is installed properly.
Quick Repair Options
The most basic problem that can cause a wand to not move 2-inch blinds is the wand becoming disengaged from the blinds themselves. Remove the wand from the wand control, either by removing a pin or screw, or unhooking the wand's connecting loop. Turn the wand control manually to see if the cord and blinds move. If they do, replace the wand firmly to make it engage the wand control.
Replacing Parts
If the wand is seated properly and your 2-inch blinds still won't move, you may need to replace one or more parts in the blind system. The weight of 2-inch blinds, especially wooden or metal blinds, places strain on the carriers, cords and screws. If any of these parts break, the blinds will likely stick. Check for rusty or broken hardware before disassembling the blinds. If you need to order replacement carriers, clips or cords, use the opportunity to clean or paint your blinds while they're off the window.
