Kohler widespread faucets use the same valves in the kitchen and bathroom.
Learning to repair your own faucets can help you save money. Repairing your Kohler widespread double-sink faucet is surprisingly uncomplicated. Kohler's sink faucets are manufactured with simplicity of design, functionality and maintenance, with the do-it-yourselfer in mind. Since they have a lifetime warranty, you can call Kohler's warranty phone number and ask for repair and replacement parts free.
Instructions
1. Close the water supply valves to the kitchen faucet. There should be a hot and cold water shut-off valve located under the kitchen sink. Rotate the small valve handles clockwise by hand until they stop. Turn the hot and cold faucet valves on to make sure all water flow has ceased.
2. Grasp the base of the Kohler faucet handle by hand and then turn the handle base counterclockwise, or to the left, until the whole faucet handle assembly is removed. If you cannot turn the handle's base by hand you can use a plumber's strap wrench. Pull the handle-stem spline adapter off the faucet cartridge stem by hand. The spline is a small brass ridged adapter that joins a diverse number of handles to one faucet cartridge.
3. Remove the Kohler kitchen faucet cartridges. Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the ceramic disc faucet cartridges from their valve base. Rotate the cartridges counterclockwise to remove them. If the cartridges are difficult to remove due to heavy mineral buildup, soak them in CLR or vinegar for 20 minutes. This will break down the corrosion and allow you to remove the faucet cartridges.
4. Wipe the inside of each cartridge valve barrel with a clean cloth to remove any debris. If there is evidence of mineral buildup and corrosion, a white sandy grit, sand it off the valve with a small piece of plumber's emery cloth. Turn the shut-off valve handle on just enough to wash out the debris from inside the cartridge barrel and then turn it back off immediately.
5. Install new cartridges in each valve. Apply a thin layer of plumber's silicone lubricant to the inside of each valve and the outside of each cartridge before installing. Screw each cartridge in by hand and then secure it with your adjustable wrench. Place the handle-stem spline adaptor on the new cartridges. Screw the faucet handles back on each valve. Turn the water on and test the faucet for leaks.
Tips Warnings
Place a cup or glass over the faucet valve before rinsing out the debris. This will help control any over-spray.
Do not use a sharp edged tool to remove the handle; you can easily damage the faucet's finish.
