Healthy Deck Wood Finishes Not Toxic For Pets

You can protect your deck from the elements and keep it safe for your pets.

A healthy finish for a wooden deck relies on a few key factors such as the base of the finish, the materials used and the environmental effects of the finish including its application. Water-based finishes are the least toxic both as a product and in the application process. The low amount of toxins in these types of finishes makes them more friendly for pets and children.

No VOCs

VOC stands for volatile organic compound. These are solvents that are present in many household products such as aerosol spray cans, paint, stains and other finishes. They create toxic fumes that cause pollution both in the immediate area and further as they travel up into the atmosphere. These compounds are also responsible for the harsh fumes that become apparent with their usage. They are toxic to humans, especially young ones and worse for sensitive pets.

Biodegradable

A healthy deck finish must be biodegradable. This means that the finish can break down successfully to become part of the earth once more. This is only possible when the materials used in the process are not harmful to the environment, produce no pollution and are organic as opposed to artificial. A green, sustainable deck finish will protect against the weather, prevent moisture build-up and be safe for both humans and animals.

Non-Flammable

It is imperative that a healthy deck finish is not flammable. If the materials contained inside the finish are chemically based, it will be much more toxic and sensitive to flames. This is especially dangerous on a deck as a barbeque grill poses an obvious threat of fire and smoke. A finish that is non-flammable allows a layer of protection for the wood instead of expediting the fire hazards.

No Hazardous Materials on the MSDS

The ingredients listed on the Material Safety Data Sheet should all be non-toxic and safe. There should be no hazardous materials listed on it. In addition, there should be no warnings as pictured on the safety symbols on the can or bottle. If these labels are not present, the finish will be safer for your pets. For example, by law the symbols of poison, toxic and flammable must be labeled for your safety. Do not purchase deck finishes with these implications.
