make-wooden-diagonal-storage-cubes

Wine storage units typically feature diagonal storage cubes.

Wooden diagonal storage cubes can be used for book storage and displaying of various collections. This type of storage unit is similar to traditional cube units, but the construction process is harder due to the variety of board lengths and angles.

Instructions

1. Measure, mark and cut two pieces of 1/2 inch plywood which are 12 inches wide and 4 feet long. These are the top and bottom of your storage cubes.

2. Measure, mark and cut two pieces of 1/2-inch plywood which are 12 inches wide and 49 inches long. These are the sides of your storage cubes.

3. Measure, mark and cut two pieces of 1/2-inch plywood which are 12 inches wide and 68 inches long. These are your diagonal shelves. Mark the top and back edge of each board.

4. Measure, mark and cut four pieces of 1/2-inch plywood which are 12 inches wide and 22 3/4 inches long. These are your corner diagonals. Mark the top and back edge of each board.

5. Measure, mark and cut four pieces of 1/2-inch plywood which are 12 inches wide and 45 1/2 inches long. These are your middle diagonals. Mark the top and back edge of each board.

6. Position the bottom of your storage cubes on a flat surface horizontally. Stand a side vertically on the left end of the bottom. Secure the two pieces together at the corners using wood screws. The bottom edge of the side should be flush with the flat surface. Repeat this process on the right end of the bottom with the remaining side.

7. Slide the top of the storage cubes between the top of the sides so the top and sides are aligned. Secure the sides to the top using wood screws.

8. Mark the bottom, top and sides of your storage cubes every 16 inches. Number the markings so they go from the left to right on the top and bottom and from top to bottom on the sides.

9. Position one middle diagonal between the bottom left corner and right top corner. Mark the corner angle on the back of the diagonal. Place the piece to the left side. Position the second middle diagonal between the bottom right corner and top left corner. Mark the corner angle on the back of the diagonal. Place the piece to the right side. Make sure that the board tops are facing up and the back of the boards is positioned along the back of the frame.

10. Position a corner diagonal between the first mark on the left side and the first mark on the top. Mark the angle on the back of the diagonal. Position a corner diagonal between the second mark on the bottom and the second mark on the right side. Place the pieces to the left side. Position a corner diagonal between the first mark on the right side and the second mark on the top. Mark the angle on the back of the diagonal. Position a corner diagonal between the second mark on the left side and the first mark on the bottom. Place the pieces to the right side.

11. Position a middle diagonal between the second mark on the left side and the second mark on the top. Mark the angle on the back of the diagonal. Position a middle diagonal between the first mark on the bottom and the first mark on the right side. Mark the angle on the back of the diagonal. Place the pieces to the left side. Position a middle diagonal between the first mark on the top and the second mark on the right side. Mark the angle on the back of the diagonal. Position a middle diagonal between the first mark on the left side and the second mark on the bottom. Mark the angle on the back of the diagonal. Place the pieces to the right side.

12. Adjust the miter saw and cut the ends of each board on the markings made in Steps 8 through 10.

13. Lay the boards in the pile on the left on a flat surface in front of you so the top of each board is horizontally positioned with the face up and the front edge closest to you. Measure and mark the center of each corner board. Measure the middle boards and divide the measurement in thirds. Mark the boards to correspond with the measurements. Cut a 6-inch deep, 1/2-inch wide channel at each of the measurements. Position the boards in their respective position in the frame. Secure the boards into place at all four corners using wood screws passing through the frame and into the board. Make sure the screws are inserted with the angle of the shelves to keep the screws from coming through the surface. All measurements and cuts should be made on the front edge of each shelf.

14. Lay the boards in the pile on the right on a flat surface in front of you so the top of each board is horizontally positioned with the face up and the back edge of each shelf closest to you. Measure and mark the center of each corner board. Measure the middle boards and divide the measurement in thirds. Mark the boards to correspond with the measurements. Cut a 6-inch deep, 1/2-inch wide channel at each of the measurements. Position the boards in their respective position in the frame. Slide the boards into position so the channels in these boards slide into the channels of the boards cut and mounted in Step 13. Secure the boards into place at all four corners using wood screws passing through the frame and into the board. Make sure the screws are inserted with the angle of the shelves to keep the screws from coming through the surface. All measurements and cuts should be made on the back edge of each shelf.

Tips Warnings

Reading the instructions and drawing a diagram with the proper numbering will help you to easily visualize the final construction and board placement. The measurements of the frame and shelves can be altered to build a larger unit.
